Assistant Professor Zuming Liu and his team from the College of Smart Energy at Shanghai Jiao Tong University published a paper titled "Low-carbon transition pathways of power systems for Guangdong-Hongkong-Macau region in China" in Energy & Environmental Science—a renowned journal in the energy field. The paper proposes a comprehensive assessment model for energy systems with high spatiotemporal resolution, integrating investment planning and operational scheduling. It studies multi-scenario low-carbon transition pathways for the power system in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau region, and finds that to achieve net-zero emissions in the region’s power system by 2050, an average annual expenditure of 21.8 billion US dollars is required, accounting for 0.94% of the regional gross domestic product (GDP) of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau region in 2021. If net-zero emissions are to be achieved before 2035, the average annual expenditure will need to increase by 5.18%.

The study also reveals that increasing fossil fuel prices and strengthening the transmission network are conducive to promoting the low-carbon transition of the energy system in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau region. The first author of this paper is Zuming Liu, and the corresponding authors are Zuming Liu and Xiaomin Xie. The collaborators, Mingquan Li and Edgar Virguez, are from Beihang University and Princeton University respectively. This research was supported by the Shanghai Pujiang Talent Program.
